How Do Puronics Water Softeners Work?

Puronics manufactures multi-media water conditioners that soften, filter and refine your water all in one system. The advanced technology used by our systems ensures great tasting, soft water that is better for your home, hair and skin.

Three Types of Media

As the water moves through the system, it passes through several layers of media. Each one has a specific role in improving your water quality.

Enhanced Filtration Media

We have two different types of water softeners: Bacteriostatic and Chlorostatic®. Each type contains a layer of a different form of activated carbon to filter your water. Our Bacteriostatic water softeners contain SilverShield® HYgene®, which is embedded with microscopic particles of silver to inhibit bacteria growth within the filter media bed. It also reduces chlorine and unpleasant tastes and odors. This filter requires replacement every 12-18 months. Our Chlorostatic® water softeners contain ChloroShield® Clearess®, an advanced carbon that is very effective at reducing both chlorine and chloramines, as well as tastes and odors. This filter does not require replacement when used on municipal water at normal household flow rates and chlorine levels.

Ion Exchange Resin

The next layer is our high-capacity S-759 monospheric ion exchange resin. This is the media that softens your water, also reducing iron and turbidity. It is made up of tiny beads which hold sodium or potassium ions. When hard water moves through the resin, the hardness minerals switch places with the sodium or potassium. Once the resin beads are full of hard water ions, the system goes through a regeneration cycle in which the resin is “refreshed” with new sodium or potassium ions. You can read more about how a water softener works. Our resin beads are uniform in size, providing higher flow rates and maximum efficiency.

Silica Gravel

The final layer is made up of silica gravel, which provides additional filtration. It also polishes your water, making it crystal clear when it comes out of the tap.

Smart Control Valve

All of our water softeners use our patented iGen® control valve to manage system operations. This smart valve keeps track of your water consumption history for 60 days. It uses this information to decide when it needs to regenerate, saving water and salt. The iGen® valve also knows if your filter needs to be replaced, and it will say “Call for Service” on the display and provide your dealer’s phone number.
